Enugu, Nigeria — Police in Enugu State have taken into custody a mother and her adult daughter in connection with the brutal killing of their 70-year-old relative, widely known in the community as “Mama Oliver,” in what residents describe as a shocking act of family violence linked to an alleged dispute over missing money. Punch Newspapers +1 The Enugu State Police Command confirmed the arrest of Loretta Asadu and her daughter, Chikamso, on suspicion of murdering the elderly woman at her home in Ezema Nru, Nsukka Local Government Area on Tuesday, February 24, 2026. Police spokesperson Daniel Ndukwe said the investigation is ongoing. Punch Newspapers according to neighbours who spoke on condition of anonymity, Mama Oliver — originally from Umabor-Ehalumona — had relocated to Ezema Nru to care for Loretta and her daughter, both of whom were reported by the community to be living with mental health challenges. Punch Newspapers the eyewitness account alleges that while a relative had gone out to buy food for Mama Oliver, she was left alone with the suspects. At that time, Chikamso reportedly untied her mother, and the two women allegedly dragged the elderly victim behind the house and attacked her with bladed weapons, accusing her of stealing their money. Punch Newspapers residents described the killing as deeply disturbing and a rare eruption of violence in their tight-knit rural community. “The deceased was a peaceful woman,” one neighbour told reporters. “We were called and told that something terrible had happened. The entire situation is heartbreaking.” Punch Newspapers following the attack, the victim’s body was taken to a mortuary in Nsukka where an autopsy is expected to be carried out as part of the ongoing police investigation. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether formal charges have been filed against the suspects. Punch Newspapers this incident highlights persistent concerns about elder care, mental health support, and intra-family disputes in Nigeria’s communities. It also underscores the challenges law enforcement faces in cases where reports of psychological instability intersect with extreme violence.
