A civil society organisation has called for justice following the alleged killing of a man by his brother in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, after accusations of witchcraft sparked a violent confrontation within the family.
According to reports, the tragic incident occurred in a community on the outskirts of the city, where a man allegedly attacked and killed his elder brother after accusing him of practicing witchcraft and being responsible for his personal misfortunes. Local residents said the dispute escalated quickly, resulting in a fatal assault before neighbours could intervene.
The suspect was reportedly apprehended by local authorities and handed over to operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, who have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing.
A rights advocacy group based in the Niger Delta condemned the incident and urged security agencies to ensure that justice is served. The group described the killing as “a disturbing reminder of the dangers posed by superstition-driven violence,” warning that accusations of witchcraft continue to fuel deadly conflicts in several communities across Nigeria.
“Every citizen deserves protection under the law. No allegation—spiritual or otherwise—should justify violence or extrajudicial punishment,” the organisation said in a statement, calling on authorities to prosecute the suspect in accordance with Nigerian law.
Cases involving witchcraft accusations have periodically led to violence in different parts of the country, particularly in rural and semi-urban communities where superstition remains deeply rooted. Experts say such incidents highlight the need for sustained public education, stronger community mediation mechanisms, and consistent law enforcement responses.
Authorities in Rivers State have not yet released a comprehensive official statement regarding the incident, but police sources confirmed that the suspect remains in custody while investigations continue.
Human rights advocates say the case underscores the importance of addressing harmful cultural beliefs that can lead to violence, while also strengthening legal accountability to prevent similar tragedies.
