Grandfather Arrested at Abuja Airport with Cocaine Hidden in Pepper, NDLEA Says!

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a 74-year-old Nigerian man, identified as Ikwuakalom Emeka, for allegedly attempting to smuggle a large quantity of cocaine concealed in food items through the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

According to NDLEA officials, the suspect was intercepted at the airport’s departure terminal while preparing to board a flight bound for the United Kingdom. Authorities said a routine baggage inspection uncovered approximately 11 kilograms of cocaine carefully hidden inside packaged pepper and other food items in his luggage.

The anti-narcotics agency disclosed that the concealed narcotics were discovered following a detailed search conducted by its officers stationed at the international airport. The operation forms part of the NDLEA’s intensified efforts to combat drug trafficking networks that frequently exploit international travel routes to move illicit substances across borders.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect allegedly attempted to disguise the illegal drugs within everyday food products to evade airport screening procedures. NDLEA officers, however, detected irregularities in the luggage during routine checks, prompting a more thorough examination that ultimately led to the discovery of the concealed cocaine.

Officials of the agency confirmed that the suspect was immediately taken into custody for further questioning and investigation. Authorities say the arrest underscores the growing sophistication of drug trafficking methods and the continued vigilance of Nigeria’s anti-drug enforcement agencies in countering such schemes.

The NDLEA has repeatedly warned that traffickers increasingly recruit vulnerable individuals, including elderly persons, to transport illicit drugs across international borders. In recent years, the agency has intensified surveillance at major airports and seaports in an effort to disrupt transnational drug trafficking operations targeting Europe and other destinations.

Nigeria remains a key transit point in global narcotics trafficking routes, largely due to its extensive international travel connections and strategic geographic position. Consequently, law enforcement authorities have continued to strengthen collaboration with international partners to curb the movement of illegal drugs through Nigerian territory.

Security analysts note that smuggling attempts involving concealed narcotics in food items, clothing, and personal belongings have become increasingly common tactics used by trafficking syndicates seeking to bypass airport security checks.

While the investigation into Ikwuakalom Emeka’s case is ongoing, NDLEA officials have reiterated their commitment to prosecuting offenders and dismantling networks responsible for drug trafficking activities. If found guilty under Nigerian drug laws, individuals convicted of trafficking significant quantities of narcotics can face severe penalties, including lengthy prison sentences.

The arrest also highlights the persistent global challenge posed by cocaine trafficking, which remains a lucrative enterprise for organized crime groups operating across continents. Authorities in Nigeria and abroad have emphasized the importance of intelligence sharing and coordinated enforcement actions to address the growing scale of illicit drug distribution networks.

The NDLEA has urged the public to remain vigilant and avoid involvement in any activity related to drug trafficking, warning that offenders will be prosecuted in accordance with the law regardless of age, status, or background.

International aviation hubs such as the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport continue to play a critical role in monitoring and preventing the movement of illegal substances, with agencies like the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency maintaining strict surveillance to detect and intercept suspicious cargo and passenger baggage.

Authorities say the arrest of the elderly suspect demonstrates that no smuggling attempt will go unchecked as Nigeria strengthens its fight against drug trafficking and its associated criminal networks.
