Google Expands AI Search in Nigeria with Yorùbá and Hausa Language Support!

Global technology company Google has expanded its artificial intelligence-powered search capabilities in Nigeria by introducing support for the Yorùbá and Hausa languages, a move aimed at making advanced digital tools more accessible to millions of native speakers across the country.
The update enables Nigerian users to interact with AI-powered search features including AI Overviews and AI Mode in their native languages, allowing them to receive AI-generated summaries, explanations, and conversational responses directly within the search interface.
Expanding Access to AI in Native Languages
According to the company, the rollout allows users to type or speak queries in Yorùbá or Hausa and receive contextual responses through Google’s AI-driven search experience. The feature is available through the Google app on Android and iOS devices as well as via the web version of Google Search.
The development reflects growing efforts by global technology firms to localize artificial intelligence tools for linguistically diverse markets, particularly across Africa where language barriers have historically limited digital inclusion.
Speaking on the update, Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Communications and Public Affairs Manager for West Africa at Google, said the initiative is designed to ensure technology reflects the linguistic realities of users.
“Building a truly global Search goes far beyond translation. It requires a nuanced understanding of local information. With the advanced multimodal and reasoning capabilities of our custom version of Gemini in Search, we’ve made huge strides in language understanding,” he said
He added that enabling Nigerians to interact with search tools in their mother tongues could significantly improve how people access and understand online information.
AI-Powered Search and Google’s Gemini Technology
The new language capabilities are powered by Google Gemini, the company’s advanced artificial intelligence model embedded within Google Search.
With this integration, users can ask complex questions and receive AI-generated explanations or summaries through both voice and text inputs, creating a more conversational search experience.
The rollout brings the number of African languages supported by Google’s AI-powered search tools to 13, including Kiswahili, Wolof, Amharic, Somali, Setswana, Sesotho, Afrikaans, Akan, Kinyarwanda, Afaan Oromoo, isiZulu, Hausa, and Yorùbá.
Why Language Inclusion Matters in Nigeria
Nigeria is home to over 500 languages, although English remains the country’s official language. Yorùbá and Hausa are among the most widely spoken, collectively used by tens of millions of Nigerians across several regions.
Industry analysts say integrating local languages into digital platforms could significantly increase technology adoption, educational access, and online participation, particularly among users who prefer communicating in indigenous languages.
For instance, a student in northern Nigeria may now conduct research in Hausa, while traders or entrepreneurs in southwestern states can search for business advice or information in Yorùbá using AI-powered search tools.
Broader Push for AI Localization in Africa
The expansion forms part of Google’s broader strategy to make artificial intelligence more inclusive across Africa, where linguistic diversity and uneven digital infrastructure have historically restricted access to advanced technologies.
Recent industry research also indicates that Nigeria is emerging as one of Africa’s fastest-growing adopters of AI tools, particularly in sectors such as education, entrepreneurship, and digital content creation.
By incorporating major African languages into its AI ecosystem, technology experts say companies like Google are working to bridge long-standing digital divides while supporting the preservation and relevance of indigenous languages in the digital age.
