Gas Supply Disruptions Force Kaduna Electric to Implement Widespread Power Cuts Across Northern Nigeria!

Reported by Musa Antiketu (Journalist)| Sele Media

Africa electricity consumers across Northern Nigeria are facing renewed power disruptions after Kaduna Electric announced a reduction in electricity supply due to constraints in gas availability for power generation. In a public notice issued to customers, the power distribution company said the shortage of natural gas an essential fuel for most thermal power plants in Nigeria has significantly reduced electricity generation at the national level. As a result, the company has received lower power allocation from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), forcing it to implement load shedding across its franchise areas.Kaduna Electric, which supplies electricity to customers in Kaduna State, Sokoto State, Kebbi State, and Zamfara State, stated that the reduction in power allocation has made it necessary to ration available electricity among communities.According to the company, the current situation stems from reduced gas supply to several generating companies within the national grid. Many of Nigeria’s power plants depend heavily on gas supplied through pipelines to produce electricity. When gas supply is constrained whether due to operational disruptions, pipeline maintenance, or supply shortfalls power generation capacity across the grid declines sharply. The Transmission Company of Nigeria subsequently allocates less electricity to distribution companies, including Kaduna Electric, which then must distribute limited power among millions of customers.Kaduna Electric acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the outages and urged customers to remain patient while stakeholders in the power sector work to stabilize supply. The company also assured consumers that efforts are ongoing to restore normal electricity distribution once gas supply to generating plants improves.Nigeria’s electricity sector has long struggled with gas supply disruptions, infrastructure limitations, and generation shortfalls. Analysts say these structural challenges continue to affect grid stability and power availability across the country, particularly in northern regions served by Kaduna Electric.Energy experts note that improving gas infrastructure, diversifying power generation sources, and expanding transmission capacity remain critical to addressing recurring electricity shortages.Multiple media outlets have reported similar developments regarding reduced electricity supply linked to gas shortages affecting power generation nationwide.
