A significant fire broke out at the Federal Secretariat complex in Abuja on Monday morning, prompting an immediate response from emergency services and government officials.

Eyewitnesses reported that the blaze was first noticed at approximately 8:20 a.m., with thick plumes of smoke rising from Section C of the Head of Service of the Federation building, part of the larger federal administrative complex in the Three Arms Zone of the Federal Capital Territory.

Officials from the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation (OHCSF) confirmed the incident, stating that the fire has been contained to the affected section. Emergency responders from the Federal Capital Territory Fire Service were deployed promptly to combat the flames.

Scenes from the Secretariat showed staff members and visitors evacuating the building as a precaution while firefighters employed specialized equipment to bring the fire under control. At the time of reporting, there have been no confirmed casualties. Authorities, however, have yet to release a formal statement on injuries or the full extent of the damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with officials promising a thorough assessment once the situation is fully contained. Past incidents, such as a 2023 fire at the Secretariat caused by an electrical utility room explosion, highlight ongoing fire safety challenges in large federal buildings.

The Federal Secretariat hosts several key departments of the Nigerian civil service and is central to government operations. Disruptions of this magnitude can affect civil service activities and public access to essential government services. Observers have called for an expedited investigation to determine the fire’s cause and prevent similar incidents in the future.
