Fire at Nigeria’s Federal Secretariat Disrupts Abuja Commute as Emergency Teams Contain Blaze
ABUJA Nigeria ,A fire outbreak at the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation within the Federal Secretariat complex in Abuja caused significant traffic congestion across parts of the capital on Monday morning, disrupting normal movement and forcing many commuters to continue their journeys on foot.
The incident was first reported this morning when thick plumes of smoke were seen rising from Section C of the multi storey Head of Service building located in the Federal Secretariat district of the Federal Capital Territory. Staff members and visitors were quickly evacuated as emergency responders moved in to contain the situation.
Authorities confirmed that the fire affected only a specific section of the building. In a statement, the media department of the Office of the Head of the Civil Service said the blaze was limited to Section C and was being handled by emergency officials.
Traffic Paralysis Around Federal Secretariat
The emergency response triggered temporary road restrictions around the Federal Secretariat area, creating heavy traffic gridlock on major routes leading into the complex. Motorists were forced to abandon vehicles in some instances, while passengers trekked long distances to reach workplaces and other destinations.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were deployed to manage traffic and assist in diverting vehicles away from the affected zone as firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control.

Government Infrastructure Safety in Focus
The incident has renewed attention on safety protocols in major government facilities in Nigeria’s administrative capital. Abuja’s Federal Secretariat houses several ministries, departments, and agencies critical to the country’s public administration.
Experts note that swift intervention by emergency services is often critical in preventing large scale damage in high density government complexes where daily operations involve thousands of civil servants.
Further updates are expected as investigators determine the origin of the fire and evaluate structural impacts on the affected section of the building.
