A tragic road accident on the busy Lekki–Epe Expressway in Lagos State has claimed the lives of four people and left four others seriously injured, renewing concerns about road safety and traffic management along one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing urban corridors.
The collision, which involved a truck and a commercial minibus, occurred in the early hours of the weekend along the Lekki–Epe axis, a major arterial route linking Lagos Island to the rapidly developing Lekki Peninsula and Epe communities.
According to Adebayo Taofiq, Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the fatal crash resulted from a violent collision between the heavy-duty truck and the passenger minibus, commonly used for commercial transportation across the Lekki corridor.
In a statement released on Sunday, Taofiq confirmed that four passengers lost their lives at the scene of the accident, while four others sustained severe injuries and were immediately transported to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment.
Emergency responders, including LASTMA officials and other rescue personnel, arrived swiftly at the crash site to conduct rescue operations, manage traffic flow, and clear the wreckage to restore movement along the expressway.
“The incident involved a truck and a commercial minibus, leading to the unfortunate loss of four lives, while four other victims sustained serious injuries,” the statement said. Authorities added that the injured individuals were taken to hospitals where they are currently receiving medical attention.
The Lekki–Epe Expressway has become one of Lagos’ most heavily used transportation corridors due to rapid urban expansion, residential development, and commercial activities along the Lekki axis. The route serves as a key connection between Lagos Island, Victoria Island, Ajah, Sangotedo, and Epe, and has experienced increasing traffic volume in recent years.
Transport safety analysts have repeatedly warned that the combination of heavy vehicular traffic, high-speed driving, and the growing presence of large trucks transporting construction materials and commercial goods has raised the risk of accidents along the corridor.
While authorities have not yet released a full investigation report on the cause of the crash, road safety officials emphasize that reckless driving, mechanical failure, speeding, and poor lane discipline remain major contributors to fatal road accidents across Nigeria.
Officials of LASTMA used the incident to reiterate calls for motorists especially commercial drivers and truck operators to exercise greater caution while navigating Lagos roads.
The agency urged drivers to maintain safe speeds, adhere to traffic regulations, and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on journeys. Authorities also stressed the importance of proper lane usage and responsible driving behavior to prevent avoidable tragedies.
Road safety advocates say fatal crashes such as the one on the Lekki–Epe Expressway highlight the urgent need for sustained public awareness campaigns, stronger traffic enforcement, and improved road infrastructure to reduce accident rates.
Nigeria continues to face significant road safety challenges, with thousands of deaths recorded annually from traffic accidents. According to data from national road safety authorities, commercial transport vehicles and heavy trucks are frequently involved in severe collisions due to high passenger loads and the force of impact during crashes.
In Lagos, one of Africa’s largest megacities, traffic congestion and rapid population growth have intensified pressure on road networks. Authorities have therefore been working to expand transport infrastructure, including new road projects and traffic management initiatives aimed at improving mobility and safety.
As investigations into the crash continue, the Lagos State government has extended condolences to the families of the victims and reaffirmed its commitment to improving traffic safety across the state.
For many commuters who rely daily on the Lekki–Epe Expressway, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with road travel and the shared responsibility of both authorities and road users to ensure safer highways.
