FAAN, Military Nab Four Suspected Bandits Near Akure Airport After Urgent Security Alert!

Security agencies in Nigeria have arrested four suspected bandits near Akure Airport following a coordinated security operation triggered by a distress alert around the airport’s perimeter.
The arrests were confirmed by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), which disclosed that the suspects were apprehended after security personnel detected suspicious movements behind the airport fence close to the Eleyewo community in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.
According to FAAN, the incident began when local security surveillance teams reported the presence of unidentified individuals lurking near restricted areas of the airport. The alert prompted a rapid-response operation involving aviation security officers and multiple Nigerian security agencies.
Joint Security Operation Leads to Arrest
In response to the warning, a joint task team comprising FAAN’s Aviation Security unit, the Nigerian Air Force, the Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Police Force launched a coordinated search operation around the airport environment.
Within hours of the alert, the security operatives tracked and apprehended four suspects within the vicinity of the airport facility.
FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, confirmed the development in an official statement, explaining that the suspects were arrested during a joint sweep of the area after credible intelligence suggested possible security threats around the airport.
He noted that the swift collaboration among aviation security officers and the military prevented what could have escalated into a serious security breach.
Authorities have since handed the suspects over to the police for further investigation and interrogation.
Airport Security Reinforced
Following the incident, FAAN reassured the public that airport operations remain safe and that security architecture across Nigerian airports is continuously being strengthened to detect and prevent threats.
The authority emphasized that the quick arrest demonstrates the effectiveness of inter-agency collaboration in safeguarding critical national infrastructure, including aviation facilities.
Security patrols around the airport and nearby communities have reportedly been intensified to prevent any recurrence.
Growing Security Concerns in Ondo Region
The incident also highlights broader security challenges facing parts of southwestern Nigeria, where criminal groups linked to kidnapping, banditry, and armed robbery have increasingly targeted rural communities and transport corridors.
Recent reports indicate that some areas surrounding Akure and nearby forests have experienced occasional security threats, including kidnappings and attacks on farmers.
Security analysts note that airports and other strategic facilities are particularly sensitive locations, making rapid response to suspicious activity critical for maintaining public safety and protecting air travel operations.
The swift action by security agencies around Akure Airport underscores the growing importance of intelligence sharing and collaboration between aviation authorities and national security forces.
Authorities Urge Public Vigilance
FAAN has called on residents and airport users to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements around critical infrastructure, stressing that public cooperation plays a vital role in preventing criminal activity.
Officials also reiterated that aviation safety remains a top national priority, with continuous surveillance, patrols, and intelligence gathering aimed at ensuring that Nigerian airports remain secure for passengers, workers, and surrounding communities.
As investigations continue, authorities are expected to determine whether the suspects were acting independently or as part of a broader criminal network operating in the region.
