Authorities in Nigeria have arrested a former local government councillor, Sheleru Sadiq Olalekan, over alleged involvement in drug trafficking activities in the fast-growing coastal corridor of Ibeju-Lekki in Lagos, raising renewed concerns about the infiltration of illicit narcotics networks into urban communities.
Officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) confirmed that Olalekan, who previously served as a councillor in a local government area of Lagos State, was apprehended during an intelligence-driven operation in the Ibeju-Lekki axis. The area, known for rapid infrastructural development linked to projects such as the Lekki Free Trade Zone and the Dangote Refinery, has increasingly come under scrutiny by law enforcement agencies for suspected narcotics transit activities.
According to preliminary reports from anti-narcotics officials, the suspect was arrested following surveillance operations targeting a suspected drug distribution network believed to be operating within parts of the Lekki coastal corridor. Investigators allege that the former councillor played a role in coordinating or facilitating the movement of illegal substances within the area.
While authorities have not yet disclosed the full scale of the alleged operation or the exact quantity and type of drugs involved, NDLEA officials say further investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of the network and identify additional suspects.
The arrest highlights the NDLEA’s intensified crackdown on drug trafficking rings across Nigeria. In recent months, the agency has expanded enforcement operations in strategic economic hubs and transport corridors, including Lagos, widely regarded as the country’s commercial nerve centre and a critical entry point for international trade.
Security analysts note that the Ibeju-Lekki region’s rapid economic transformation — driven by mega-projects and expanding port infrastructure — has also made it an area of strategic interest for criminal networks seeking to exploit logistics routes.
The NDLEA has reiterated its commitment to prosecuting individuals involved in narcotics trafficking regardless of social or political status. Officials emphasized that investigations into the case remain active and that the suspect will face prosecution in accordance with Nigeria’s drug control laws.
Authorities are also expected to examine potential financial links and associates connected to the alleged trafficking operation as part of broader efforts to dismantle organized drug networks operating within Lagos State and beyond.
