Emami Faults Use of Warri Kingdom by Non‑Itsekiri Monarchs

Chief Ayiri Emami, a prominent figure of the Warri Kingdom, has raised strong objections to what he describes as the “misuse” of the Warri monarchy by individuals he deems non‑Itsekiri. Emami insists that only those properly rooted in Itsekiri heritage should assume roles tied to the legacy of the Warri throne.
Emami pointed to longstanding edicts which stipulate that candidates to the throne must have their maternal lineage traced to Itsekiri or Edo, a requirement he says remains ignored when “outsiders” assume influence over the kingdom. [1]
He warned that allowing individuals outside the ethnic origin to appropriate symbols or roles of the kingdom risks undermining the integrity of its traditions and bringing instability to the Iwere land.
His remarks come amidst ongoing controversies within the kingdom involving chieftaincy titles and succession matters — including his own dispute over the Ologbotsere title of the Warri Kingdom.
Emami called on traditional authorities and government stakeholders to enforce the edicts faithfully and protect the heritage of the Warri monarchy from “cultural dilution”.
Sele Media Africa will continue to monitor reactions from the palace, Its‑ekiri chiefs and relevant stakeholders as this debate unfolds.
