El-Rufai Files ₦1bn Lawsuit Against ICPC Over Alleged Unlawful Abuja Home Raid!

Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has filed a ₦1 billion fundamental rights enforcement suit against the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and other respondents, alleging the unlawful invasion and search of his Abuja residence.
The suit, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, challenges the legality of a search warrant reportedly issued by a magistrate court and executed by anti-corruption operatives. El-Rufai is asking the court to declare the warrant invalid and the search unconstitutional, arguing that the operation violated his fundamental rights, including privacy and personal liberty.
According to court filings, the former governor contends that the warrant lacked specificity, contained drafting errors, and did not establish probable cause, rendering it legally defective. He further argues that any evidence obtained during the search should be declared inadmissible in court.
El-Rufai is seeking ₦1 billion in damages, which he says reflects the alleged psychological distress, reputational harm, and violation of constitutional rights resulting from the operation.
The lawsuit follows a recent search of his Abuja residence by ICPC operatives as part of an ongoing investigation linked to his tenure as governor of Kaduna State. His legal team maintains that the search was conducted under an invalid warrant and amounted to an unlawful intrusion.
The ICPC has yet to publicly respond in detail to the claims at the time of filing. The case is expected to test the legal boundaries of search and seizure procedures by anti-corruption agencies and could have broader implications for the enforcement of fundamental rights in Nigeria.
