The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned three senior officials of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) before the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja over alleged fraud, corruption, and money laundering involving more than ₦2.04 billion.
According to the anti-graft agency, the defendants were brought before the court on Wednesday on multiple-count charges bordering on the alleged diversion and mismanagement of public funds. Prosecutors told the court that the alleged offences occurred during the officials’ tenure at the railway corporation.
Charges and Court Proceedings
The EFCC alleged that the accused persons conspired to unlawfully convert public funds belonging to the NRC for personal use in violation of Nigeria’s anti-corruption and money-laundering laws. The commission further claimed that the transactions were structured to conceal the origin of the funds.
During the arraignment, the defendants entered pleas to the charges. The presiding judge subsequently ordered that the trial date be fixed and ruled on interim bail conditions pending further proceedings.
Legal observers note that the case underscores ongoing scrutiny of financial management within key public infrastructure agencies, particularly as the federal government continues to prioritise rail sector expansion and reform.
Anti-Corruption Drive in Focus
The EFCC has intensified enforcement actions against public officials across ministries, departments, and agencies in recent years, as part of Nigeria’s broader anti-corruption campaithat gn. Analysts say high-profile prosecutions within strategic sectors such as transportation are likely to remain a priority amid public demand for greater accountability in the management of state resources.
The matter has been adjourned to a later date for the continuation of the trial.
