Editorial Guidelines

Preamble: Our Editorial Responsibility

At Sele Media Africa, journalism is not merely a profession—it is a public trust and a moral responsibility. We exist to serve truth, protect human dignity, and amplify the unheard African voices whose stories have too often been ignored, distorted, or silenced.

Our editorial guidelines define how we gather, verify, frame, and publish information. They guide our journalists, editors, and contributors in producing work that is accurate, ethical, fearless, and deeply responsible—especially in contexts of conflict, injustice, and marginalisation.

These principles apply to all content published on selemedia.org and across our digital platforms.

1. Editorial Independence

Sele Media Africa is editorially independent.

  • We do not accept direction, influence, or control from political parties, governments, corporations, donors, or interest groups.
  • Editorial decisions are made solely on the basis of public interest, newsworthiness, and truth.
  • Financial considerations, partnerships, or advertising relationships must never determine editorial content.

Our loyalty is not to power—but to the people, especially the unheard African voices.

2. Commitment to Truth and Accuracy

Truth is the foundation of our journalism.

  • Every story must be based on verified facts, credible sources, and rigorous cross-checking.
  • We distinguish clearly between facts, analysis, and opinion.
  • Anonymous sources are used sparingly and only when there is a compelling public interest and the information cannot be obtained otherwise.
  • We do not publish rumours, speculation, or unverified claims.

If an error occurs, we correct it promptly, transparently, and visibly.

3. Amplifying Unheard African Voices

Sele Media Africa exists to amplify unheard African voices, not merely dominant narratives.

  • We prioritise stories from marginalised, underreported, and vulnerable communities across Africa.
  • Special editorial attention is given to communities in Nigeria’s Middle Belt and other regions where violence, displacement, and systemic neglect have silenced voices and erased stories.
  • We centre people, not statistics—ensuring victims, survivors, and local communities are represented with dignity and context.

Our journalism seeks to restore voice to those history has pushed to the margins.

4. Conflict-Sensitive and Responsible Reporting

We report on conflict, insecurity, and violence with care, restraint, and responsibility.

  • We avoid sensationalism, inflammatory language, and graphic content.
  • We provide context—historical, social, political, and economic—so audiences understand why events occur, not just what happened.
  • We do not glorify violence, extremist ideologies, or perpetrators.
  • We are mindful of the safety and dignity of victims, survivors, and affected communities.

Our reporting aims to inform, not inflame; to expose injustice, not deepen harm.

5. Fairness, Balance, and Right of Reply

Sele Media Africa is committed to fairness.

  • Individuals, institutions, or groups accused of wrongdoing are given a reasonable right of reply, where appropriate.
  • We seek multiple perspectives, especially in complex or contested issues.
  • Balance does not mean false equivalence; truth and evidence guide our judgments.

We listen carefully—but we do not compromise truth in the name of convenience.

6. Ethical Newsgathering

Our journalists uphold the highest ethical standards.

  • We do not obtain information through deception, coercion, or harassment.
  • We respect privacy, especially in cases involving children, victims of violence, and vulnerable individuals.
  • Payments, gifts, or favours in exchange for coverage are strictly prohibited.

The integrity of our process is as important as the story itself.

7. Opinion, Analysis, and Commentary

Sele Media Africa publishes opinion and analysis as part of healthy public discourse.

  • Opinions are clearly labelled and separated from news reporting.
  • Contributors are responsible for their views, but submissions must still meet standards of accuracy, civility, and respect for human dignity.
  • Hate speech, incitement, dehumanisation, or discrimination have no place on our platform.

We welcome strong ideas—but not harmful rhetoric.

8. Corrections and Accountability

We are accountable to our audience.

  • Errors are acknowledged openly and corrected without delay.
  • Significant corrections are clearly noted within the original story.
  • Readers may report errors or ethical concerns through our official channels.

Trust is built not by perfection, but by honesty.

9. Safety and Well-Being

We recognise the risks faced by journalists, especially those reporting from conflict-affected regions.

  • We prioritise the safety and well-being of our correspondents.
  • We do not pressure journalists to take unnecessary risks.
  • Trauma-aware practices guide our coverage and internal processes.

No story is worth a life.

10. Our Editorial Ethos

Sele Media Africa believes journalism must do more than inform—it must bear witness, preserve memory, and shape conscience.

We are not neutral in the face of injustice.
We are not silent when communities are erased.
We are not casual with truth.

“We are not just reporting news; we are archiving the history of a rising continent.”
