The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested the suspected mastermind behind the kidnapping and killing of respected traditional ruler Ezeogo Francis Igwe, a development authorities say marks a major breakthrough in the investigation into the high-profile crime that has shaken communities across southeastern Nigeria.

Police confirmed that the suspect, identified as Nwazunku Stephen, was apprehended following sustained surveillance and intelligence-driven operations conducted by operatives of the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Squad.

Investigators disclosed that the arrest followed critical information provided by one of the suspects earlier detained in connection with the case, which led security operatives to a hideout allegedly linked to the criminal network responsible for the abduction.

The late monarch, traditional ruler of Ndufu-Alike Autonomous Community in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, was abducted on March 1, 2026, while reportedly travelling to church in his community. Authorities later confirmed that he was killed by his captors after a ransom demand was made to his family.

Weapons Recovered as Investigation Deepens
According to the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Joshua Ukandu, a search of the suspect’s hideout yielded several weapons and items believed to be connected to the kidnapping operation.

Items recovered by police include:
One submachine gun (SMG) rifle

One pump-action rifle

Three locally made Beretta pistols

Eleven rounds of 9mm live ammunition

Ten live cartridges

A machete and shovel

Assorted charms

Police officials said the suspect is currently assisting investigators and providing information that may lead to further arrests as authorities intensify efforts to dismantle the broader criminal syndicate behind the attack.

Earlier Arrests and Recovery of Monarch’s Remains
Prior to the latest arrest, security operatives had already detained several individuals believed to be members of the kidnapping syndicate. During interrogation, some of the suspects reportedly confessed that the monarch died while in captivity shortly after the abduction.

Authorities also confirmed that the remains of the late monarch were recovered following intelligence obtained from suspects, while security agencies continue efforts to track down other fleeing members of the gang.

Outrage and Grief Across Ebonyi
The killing of the monarch has triggered widespread grief and condemnation across Ebonyi State and beyond.

The late royal father was widely respected within the region and was also the father of Barrister Kelechi Igwe, the immediate past Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State.

Community leaders, civil society actors, and public officials have described the killing as a tragic assault on both the traditional institution and the security of local communities, urging authorities to ensure that all perpetrators are brought to justice.

Police Vow Justice
The Ebonyi State Police Command has reassured residents that investigations remain ongoing and that every individual connected to the crime will be identified and prosecuted.

Security authorities say the case remains a priority as law enforcement agencies intensify efforts to combat kidnapping and violent crime in southeastern Nigeria.
