An operative of Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) narrowly escaped lynching after being attacked by a group of youths at a polling unit in Kuje during the ongoing area council elections in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The incident occurred at a polling station located at Junior Secondary School in the Kuje area council, where more than 50 youths reportedly descended on the operative in circumstances that remain unclear at the time of reporting. The DSS official was said to have escaped the scene before the situation escalated into a fatal mob action.
The FCT area council elections, held across six councils including Kuje, Abaji, and Gwagwalada, have drawn heightened security presence amid concerns over possible electoral violence. Civil society groups had earlier warned of vulnerabilities in some councils and called for proactive security deployment to prevent disruptions.
Security personnel were deployed across polling units in Kuje and other parts of the FCT as electoral activities commenced, reflecting broader efforts to maintain order during the polls.
While the full circumstances surrounding the attempted lynching remain under investigation, the incident highlights ongoing concerns about the safety of election officials and security operatives during electoral exercises in Nigeria. Past elections have recorded similar cases of violence targeting officials and observers, underscoring the need for improved election security frameworks.
As of press time, authorities had not released an official statement confirming arrests or injuries linked to the incident.
