Nigeria’s domestic intelligence agency, the Department of State Services (DSS), has intercepted two suspected arms traffickers in Gombe State, seizing a cache of high-calibre weapons allegedly destined for criminal networks operating across the North-East.Security sources confirmed that the suspects — identified as Sani Gesha and Muhammad Alhaji Muhammad — were apprehended in Mararaban Tula, Kaltungo Local Government Area of Gombe State, following what authorities described as a three-week intelligence-led surveillance operation. According to preliminary findings, the suspects were arrested while travelling in a grey Toyota Corolla bearing registration number Taraba JAL 475 YQ. A search of the vehicle reportedly uncovered two Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs), an RPG launcher, and assorted ammunition.Investigators allege that the weapons were intended for delivery to an individual identified as Ardo Hamma Ari, said to be a resident of Alkaleri Local Government Area in Bauchi State. Authorities are yet to confirm whether additional arrests have been made in connection with the case.Expanding Arms Trafficking Networks in Nigeria’s Northeast security officials believe the suspects were involved in a broader arms trafficking network spanning Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba, and Adamawa states — a corridor that has witnessed persistent security challenges including banditry, insurgency, and communal violence. The interception underscores ongoing concerns over the proliferation of illicit small arms and light weapons across Nigeria’s northern region. Analysts have repeatedly warned that cross-border smuggling routes and internal trafficking networks continue to fuel insecurity, undermining stabilization efforts in the Northeast. While the DSS has not yet released an official public statement detailing the operation, intelligence-led crackdowns on arms smuggling have intensified in recent months amid renewed security operations by federal authorities. Security implications the seizure of military-grade equipment such as RPGs signals a potentially significant threat had the weapons reached intended recipients. Rocket Propelled Grenades are typically associated with insurgent or paramilitary activity due to their destructive capability against armored targets and fortified positions.Security experts say the interception may disrupt planned violent operations and highlights the importance of coordinated intelligence efforts among federal and state agencies.Nigeria’s security agencies have consistently emphasized the need for improved border surveillance, community intelligence cooperation, and inter-agency collaboration to curb the illegal arms trade. Ongoing investigation authorities indicate that investigations are ongoing to determine the full scope of the trafficking network, including supply chains, financing structures, and possible accomplices across the affected states. The suspects are expected to face prosecution under Nigeria’s firearms and national security laws upon conclusion of investigations.
