Global human rights watchdog Amnesty International has condemned what it describes as the arbitrary detention of Nigerian social media commentator Sani Waspapping by Nigeria’s domestic intelligence agency, the Department of State Services (DSS), calling on authorities to either charge him in court or release him immediately.
According to Amnesty International, Waspapping was arrested in Kaduna State on Friday and has remained in custody without access to his family members or legal representation. The organization expressed concern that the continued detention violates fundamental principles of due process and the rule of law.
Arrest Linked to Social Media Commentary
Human rights advocates believe Waspapping’s arrest is connected to his social media posts addressing the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Amnesty International noted that he is the second individual reportedly detained by Nigerian security authorities in connection with commentary about the current geopolitical crisis in the region.
In a statement, the organization warned that detaining individuals over online expression risks undermining constitutional protections for freedom of speech and civic participation.
“The Nigerian authorities must abide by the rule of law at all times,” the group stated, emphasizing that Waspapping must be granted prompt access to legal counsel and family members while authorities determine the legal basis of the detention.
Growing Debate Over Digital Expression in Nigeria
The incident has renewed debate about digital freedoms and the responsibilities of security agencies in managing online discourse in Africa’s largest democracy. Civil liberties advocates argue that arrests linked to online commentary could create a chilling effect on public debate, particularly around international political issues.
Amnesty International urged Nigerian authorities to ensure that security measures remain consistent with both domestic legal standards and international human rights obligations.
“If there is credible evidence of wrongdoing, the authorities must charge him promptly before a competent court,” the organization stated. “Otherwise, he should be released immediately.”
Calls for Transparency and Rule of Law
Legal observers say the situation underscores the importance of transparency and procedural fairness in law enforcement actions involving online speech. Ensuring access to lawyers, family members, and formal charges within a reasonable timeframe is widely regarded as a cornerstone of democratic governance and judicial accountability.
As of the time of reporting, the DSS has not issued a detailed public statement clarifying the legal grounds for Waspapping’s detention.
