Billionaire industrialist Aliko Dangote has announced that everyday Nigerians will soon have the opportunity to purchase shares in his 650,000 barrels-per-day refinery, with dividends payable in either naira or dollars. The move is expected within the next four to five months, signaling a landmark step in inclusive investment in Nigeria’s energy sector.
The announcement came during a visit by Bashir Bayo Ojulari, Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), who commended the refinery as a “world-class” facility and urged Nigerians to appreciate the bold project that is redefining the country’s refining capacity.
Boosting Nigeria’s Fuel Self-Sufficiency
Operational since late 2024, the Dangote Refinery has significantly increased Nigeria’s domestic fuel production, reducing reliance on imported refined products. Analysts highlight that the facility, one of the largest in the world, is pivotal for the nation’s energy security, economic diversification, and job creation.
Strengthening Industry Collaboration
During the visit, both Dangote and the NNPC CEO emphasized ongoing cooperation in areas including crude supply, trading, and strategic partnerships. Improved relations between Dangote Group and NNPC are seen as critical to maximizing the refinery’s output and positioning Nigeria as a regional energy hub.
The planned public share offering, combined with dollar-denominated dividends, is expected to attract both domestic and international investors, fostering broader public participation in one of Africa’s most ambitious industrial ventures.
