The Cross River State House of Assembly has indefinitely suspended Hon. Ovat Dickson Agbor, the lawmaker representing Obubra I State Constituency, following allegations of domestic violence involving his wife.
The decision was reached during plenary on Thursday after a motion was moved by Hon. Davies Etta and seconded by Hon. Francis Bassey Asuquo. Lawmakers condemned the alleged conduct, describing it as unbecoming of a public official and inconsistent with the ethical standards expected of members of the legislature.
Following deliberations, the Assembly resolved to suspend Agbor from all legislative activities pending the outcome of an investigation. An ad hoc committee has been constituted to probe the allegations and report its findings to the House for further legislative action.
Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, emphasized that the Assembly remains committed to maintaining discipline, dignity, and integrity within the legislative institution. According to him, elected officials must conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the trust placed in them by the electorate.
“The House will not condone any behaviour capable of bringing the legislature into disrepute,” Ayambem reportedly said, reiterating the Assembly’s resolve to uphold accountability and ethical leadership.
The controversy surrounding the lawmaker has drawn significant public attention in Cross River State. Reports indicate that the allegations of domestic violence had earlier attracted criticism from state leaders, including Governor Bassey Otu and the First Lady, who reportedly condemned the alleged conduct as unacceptable.
However, in a public statement addressing the situation, Glory Agbor, the lawmaker’s wife, appealed for privacy and stated that the matter had been resolved within the family. She maintained that their marriage remains intact and urged the public and media to refrain from further speculation about their personal affairs.
Despite her statement, the Cross River State House of Assembly has insisted that the suspension will remain in force until the investigative committee concludes its work and presents its findings.
The development has reignited broader conversations about accountability among public office holders and the role of legislative institutions in addressing allegations of domestic violence and misconduct.
