A new security report has revealed a grim snapshot of violence across Nigeria, indicating that at least 624 people were killed and 419 others abducted within just 28 days in February, highlighting the persistent security crisis affecting multiple regions of the country.

The report, compiled by security monitoring groups tracking nationwide incidents, documents dozens of attacks by armed groups, bandits, and insurgents targeting rural communities, highways, and vulnerable settlements across northern and central Nigeria.

Widespread Violence Across Several States

According to the findings, the killings and kidnappings occurred in multiple states including Kaduna, Zamfara, Benue, Niger, Plateau, Borno, Katsina, and Sokoto, where communities continue to face recurring attacks from criminal networks and extremist groups.

Security analysts say the figures reflect the scale and frequency of coordinated assaults by bandit groups and insurgent factions, particularly in Nigeria’s northwest and north-central regions, where armed groups routinely raid villages, burn homes, and abduct residents for ransom.

In some cases, attackers reportedly stormed communities late at night, opening fire indiscriminately and abducting villagers. In others, victims were seized along highways or from farms, underscoring the persistent vulnerability of rural populations.

Escalating Pattern of Kidnappings

Kidnapping remains one of the most lucrative criminal enterprises for armed groups in Nigeria. Victims are often held in forest camps and released only after families or communities raise significant ransom payments.

Security experts warn that the surge in abductions is further weakening agricultural production and local economies, particularly in farming communities where residents fear going to their fields.

Nigeria has experienced a dramatic rise in kidnappings and armed attacks in recent years, with data from various security assessments showing thousands of deaths and abductions linked to banditry, insurgency, and communal violence across the country.

Security Forces Intensify Operations

Authorities say the Nigerian military and other security agencies continue to conduct operations aimed at dismantling terrorist cells and rescuing hostages.

Military updates have previously indicated that troops regularly neutralise terrorists, arrest suspects, and recover weapons during nationwide operations targeting insurgents and criminal gangs.

However, analysts argue that the persistence of attacks suggests deeper structural challenges, including porous borders, weak rural security infrastructure, and the proliferation of illegal arms.

Calls for Urgent Security Reforms

Civil society groups and policy experts have called for a more coordinated national security strategy, including improved intelligence sharing, stronger community policing frameworks, and expanded protection for rural communities.

They also stress the need for economic interventions in conflict-prone regions, warning that poverty, displacement, and weak governance structures can fuel recruitment into criminal and extremist groups.

As Nigeria continues to grapple with overlapping security threats—from insurgency in the northeast to banditry in the northwest and communal violence in the Middle Belt—the February figures serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for sustained security reforms and regional cooperation.
