Hyacinth Alia has called for an immediate rescue operation for an abducted girl and a coordinated search for several villagers reported missing following a deadly attack on farming communities in Nigeria’s north-central region.
The governor strongly condemned the assault, which reportedly targeted farmers in parts of Benue State, describing the incident as a tragic reminder of the persistent security challenges confronting rural communities. Authorities say the attack left multiple residents dead while others remain unaccounted for.
In a statement issued by the Benue State Government, Alia directed security agencies to intensify search and rescue efforts aimed at locating the abducted girl and tracing the whereabouts of villagers believed to have fled or been taken during the violence. He urged security personnel to ensure the perpetrators are identified and brought to justice.
“This senseless attack on hardworking farmers is deeply disturbing,” the governor said, emphasizing the need for swift and decisive security intervention to restore calm and protect vulnerable communities.
Local reports indicate that the assault occurred in rural settlements where residents rely heavily on agriculture for their livelihoods. Survivors described scenes of panic as armed assailants reportedly invaded the area, forcing villagers to flee into nearby bushes and farmlands.
Security agencies have since begun operations across affected communities in an effort to locate the missing residents and secure the safe return of the abducted victim. Authorities are also working to stabilize the area and prevent further attacks.
Benue, often referred to as Nigeria’s “food basket,” has in recent years experienced recurring security incidents linked to armed groups and communal tensions. Analysts say the continued targeting of farmers not only threatens lives but also undermines food production and rural stability in the region.
Governor Alia reiterated his administration’s commitment to collaborating with federal security agencies to strengthen protection for farming communities and improve early warning systems across vulnerable areas.
The latest attack adds to growing concerns over rural insecurity in parts of Nigeria’s Middle Belt, where communities frequently call for stronger security presence and long term strategies to address violence affecting agricultural livelihoods.
