A community in Bauchi State has confirmed that N25 million was paid to armed bandits to secure the release of 16 people, including a bride and fifteen wedding guests, who were abducted during a convoy attack in January highlighting the escalating insecurity in northern Nigeria.

The abduction occurred on 10 January 2026 along the route connecting Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area in Bauchi to Karim Lamido Local Government Area in Taraba State. The wedding convoy, transporting the bride from Gwammadaji town to her new home, was intercepted by suspected bandits, who kidnapped the newly-wedded woman and other members of the bridal party.

Victims endured 57 days in captivity under harsh conditions, according to a statement from the Gwammadaji Community Development Association. Relatives, friends, and local residents mobilized resources to raise nearly ₦25 million, which was surrendered to the kidnappers in exchange for the hostages’ release.

Community leaders criticized limited support from government and security agencies, asserting that local families bore the full burden of negotiations and ransom payment. They urged state and federal authorities to strengthen security along highways and transit routes to prevent future attacks.

The incident reflects a broader trend of kidnapping for ransom across northern Nigeria, where armed groups exploit gaps in security to abduct travelers, villagers, and attendees of social events. Analysts note that such ransom-driven kidnappings have become a lucrative criminal enterprise, often outpacing official security responses and imposing significant financial strain on affected communities.

Bauchi State authorities have not publicly disclosed operational details or confirmed any arrests related to the attack. The episode underscores ongoing concerns over the effectiveness of Nigeria’s security apparatus in safeguarding citizens, particularly in rural and high-risk transit corridors.
