The Nigerian Army has commenced an investigation into the fatal shooting of a labourer, Oluwaseyi Adeoye, during a demolition exercise in Ogun State, an incident that has raised fresh concerns over the use of force in civil enforcement operations.
Adeoye, who was reportedly working with officials from the Ogun State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, was allegedly shot by a soldier during a demolition exercise at Orile-Imo in Obafemi/Owode Local Government Area along the Sagamu-Abeokuta Expressway.
According to eyewitness accounts, tensions escalated when enforcement officials moved to demolish structures said to violate planning regulations. Soldiers present at the site reportedly objected to the exercise, leading to a confrontation that degenerated into chaos. During the clash, a soldier allegedly opened fire, and Adeoye was struck by a bullet and died at the scene.
The victimโs remains were later deposited at a morgue in Abeokuta, while authorities initiated preliminary inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Military authorities have indicated that an internal investigation is underway to determine the sequence of events and establish accountability. The probe is expected to clarify the rules of engagement governing military personnel involved in civil operations and whether established protocols were followed.
The incident underscores longstanding concerns among civil society groups about the role of armed personnel in civilian enforcement activities, particularly during demolitions and land disputes. Analysts note that such operations often carry heightened risks when disputes arise between enforcement teams and security operatives stationed at contested sites.
As investigations continue, community leaders and stakeholders have called for transparency and justice for the deceased, emphasizing the need for clear operational coordination between civilian agencies and security forces.
