Reported by Musa Antiketu (Journalist) | Sele Media Africa
Troops of the Nigerian military operating under Operation Whirl Stroke have arrested a suspected attacker in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, following an assault on a resident in the community.
Military authorities confirmed that the suspect was apprehended after soldiers responded to reports of violence involving a local resident. The incident reportedly occurred in a rural community within Guma LGA, an area that has frequently experienced security challenges linked to armed groups and communal tensions.
According to security sources, troops deployed under Operation Whirl Stroke acted swiftly after receiving intelligence about the assault. The soldiers moved into the area, where they located and detained the suspect believed to be connected to the attack. The individual is currently in military custody and is expected to be handed over to relevant authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Operation Whirl Stroke is a joint military security initiative established by the Nigerian government to address persistent violence in the country’s North-Central region. The operation focuses on states such as Benue, Nassarawa, Taraba, and parts of Kogi, where communities have faced recurring attacks linked to armed banditry, communal disputes, and clashes between farmers and herders.
Security analysts say the swift response by troops reflects ongoing efforts by the military to stabilize volatile communities and prevent further escalation of violence. However, they also emphasize the importance of sustained intelligence gathering, community engagement, and coordinated policing to address the deeper drivers of insecurity in the region.
Local authorities in Benue State have repeatedly called for increased security presence and long-term strategies to protect rural communities that remain vulnerable to sporadic attacks.
While the Nigerian military continues operations in the area, residents have been urged to cooperate with security agencies by sharing credible information that could help prevent further incidents.
The arrest comes amid broader national efforts to strengthen security coordination across Nigeria’s conflict-affected regions.
