Adebayo Warns of ‘Democratic Backslide’ as He Accuses Tinubu, Akpabio of Undermining Nigeria’s Electoral Integrity!

Former presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo has raised fresh concerns about the future of Nigeria’s democracy, alleging that ongoing political actions by President Bola Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio could reduce elections in the country to what he described as an “empty ritual.”
Speaking during a recent media engagement, Adebayo who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Social Democratic Party warned that Nigeria risks reversing key democratic gains if electoral credibility and institutional independence are weakened.
Claims of Democratic Erosion
Adebayo argued that the strength of any democracy depends on transparent elections, strong institutions, and respect for the rule of law. According to him, perceived political interference in governance structures could gradually erode public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system.
He cautioned that when citizens begin to view elections as predetermined or symbolic, democratic participation declines, potentially destabilizing the political environment.
“The danger is that elections may become mere formalities rather than genuine contests reflecting the will of the people,” he said, urging vigilance from civil society and electoral stakeholders.
Context of Nigeria’s Electoral Debate
Nigeria’s electoral credibility has remained a recurring subject of national debate, particularly following the 2023 general elections. Analysts note that concerns around voter confidence, institutional independence, and electoral reforms continue to shape political discourse across the country.
While Adebayo did not present specific evidence of coordinated actions, his remarks reflect broader opposition anxieties about democratic consolidation in Africa’s most populous nation.
Mixed Political Reactions
Political observers say the comments are likely to deepen partisan debate. Supporters of the current administration have previously rejected similar criticisms, maintaining that ongoing reforms are aimed at strengthening governance and economic stability.
As of press time, there has been no formal public response from the presidency or the leadership of the National Assembly directly addressing Adebayo’s latest remarks.
Why the Debate Matters
Governance experts emphasize that public trust in elections remains central to democratic stability. Across Africa, concerns about electoral transparency, institutional independence, and political accountability continue to dominate reform conversations.
Adebayo called on Nigerians, electoral bodies, and the judiciary to remain vigilant in safeguarding democratic norms, stressing that the country’s independence and constitutional order must not be undermined by political expediency.
