ADC’s Dele Momodu Raises Alarm Over Tinubu Administration’s Approach to Opposition!

Veteran journalist and politician Dele Momodu has accused Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, of exhibiting hostility toward political opposition, warning that the country’s democratic environment could face increasing pressure if dissenting voices are systematically weakened.
Momodu, a prominent member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made the remarks while addressing concerns about the state of opposition politics in Nigeria. According to him, the current administration appears determined to suppress or eliminate rival political forces.
He argued that strong opposition is essential for the health of any democratic system, stressing that attempts to undermine political pluralism could erode public trust in governance and democratic institutions.
“Any functioning democracy thrives on the presence of vibrant opposition,” Momodu said, suggesting that the political climate under the present government may be increasingly intolerant of dissenting voices.
President Tinubu, who assumed office in May 2023 following a highly contested election, has faced criticism from some political figures and civil society groups over issues relating to governance, economic reforms, and the management of political competition. However, supporters of the administration argue that the government remains committed to democratic principles and political inclusion.
Nigeria’s political landscape has historically been characterized by intense competition between ruling parties and opposition groups. Analysts note that tensions between governments and opposition parties are not uncommon in emerging democracies, but maintaining institutional safeguards remains crucial for stability and democratic accountability.
The remarks by Momodu have since sparked renewed discussion among political observers about the future of opposition politics in Nigeria and the broader resilience of democratic institutions in Africa’s most populous nation.
As debates continue, political analysts emphasize the importance of dialogue, transparency, and respect for constitutional processes to ensure that democratic competition remains fair and inclusive.
