US Condemns Kwara Killings, Backs President Tinubu’s Security Deployment!
Reported by Mustapha Labake Omowumi | Sele Media Africa Journalist
The United States has strongly condemned the recent deadly attacks in Kwara State, expressing deep concern over the loss of lives and throwing its weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s deployment of security forces to restore peace in the affected communities.
The brutal attacks, which targeted rural settlements including Woro and Nuku in Kaiama Local Government Area, reportedly left between 162 and 170 people dead, according to international media reports. The scale of the violence has ranked the incident among the deadliest mass killings in Nigeria in 2026, drawing widespread condemnation both locally and internationally.
Following the massacre, President Tinubu authorised the immediate deployment of an army battalion under “Operation Savannah Shield”, aimed at securing the affected areas and tracking down those responsible. The president described the attacks as “cowardly and barbaric,” while assuring victims’ families of federal support and reaffirming his administration’s resolve to confront terrorism and violent extremism nationwide.
Reacting to the development, the United States expressed official concern over Nigeria’s persistent security challenges, including the Kwara killings, and reiterated its commitment to continued security cooperation with the Nigerian government. A spokesperson for U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) confirmed that a small team of U.S. military personnel has been deployed to Nigeria to assist with broader counterterrorism collaboration.
The U.S. position comes amid increased international focus on Nigeria’s security situation, especially following earlier U.S. military actions in late 2025, when coordinated strikes were carried out against militant targets in northern Nigeria. Analysts say these steps underscore Washington’s strategic interest in containing jihadist violence and supporting Nigeria’s efforts to protect civilians.
While the U.S. condemnation reflects global concern over the safety of Nigerian communities, observers note that it also highlights growing expectations for deeper security cooperation between Abuja and Washington as Nigeria continues to battle insurgency, banditry and armed extremist groups.
