Paris, France โ French authorities have launched a major legal operation against Elon Muskโs social media platform X, raiding its Paris offices and summoning the billionaire owner for questioning as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged algorithm manipulation, biased content amplification, and other cybersecurity concerns.
The Paris public prosecutorโs cybercrime unit, with support from French police and Europol, carried out the office raid on Tuesday. The investigation, which began in January 2025, is examining whether Xโs algorithms and related systems were used to skew automated content distribution, potentially influencing political or foreign-related information flows.
Elon Musk and former X CEO Linda Yaccarino have been summoned to appear for voluntary questioning on April 20, 2026, in Paris, according to official statements from prosecutors.
Allegations Under Scrutiny
French authorities said the inquiry originated from complaints by lawmakers and cybersecurity officials regarding Xโs algorithmic behaviour. Concerns include the amplification of politically sensitive content, suppression of content diversity, and the potential spread of harmful material.
The probe has also expanded to examine content produced or promoted by Grok, Xโs AI chatbot, including instances where it allegedly generated explicit deepfake material and Holocaust denial content, which are illegal under French law.
Officials stressed that the raid was intended to ensure Xโs compliance with French legislation. The prosecutorโs office also announced it would stop using X for official communications, preferring LinkedIn and Instagram instead.
Xโs Response and Context
X has not publicly commented on the recent raid. Previously, the platform described similar investigations as โpolitically motivated.โ However, the latest actions signify heightened regulatory scrutiny in Europe over large tech companies and their influence on public discourse and digital safety.
