ACF links Kano mother, six children killings to drug abuse

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has attributed the brutal killing of a woman and her six children in Kano State to the growing menace of drug abuse, highlighting concerns over the influence of illicit substances in the regionโs rising violent crime. According to a statement made available to journalists, the victims โ identified as 35-year-old Fatima Abubakar and her six children โ were found murdered last week at their residence in Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters, Kano metropolis. ACFโs Kano State Chairman, Dr. Goni Umar, said such a heinous crime could not have been carried out โwithout the influence of drugs,โ stressing the urgent need for community engagement to tackle the problem. โOnce you see somebody slaughtering children like this, he must be under the influence of drugs or be part of a cult organisation,โ he noted.
The forumโs meeting โ held with Muryar Matan Arewa (Voice of Northern Women) and the League for Societal Protection Against Drug Abuse โ called for revival of community policing, stronger neighbourhood vigilance, and enhanced regulation of arms sales to prevent future attacks. Dr. Umar also proposed forming committees of traditional, religious, and community leaders to bolster local security efforts. He urged the government to implement systems such as thumbprint capture for residents to help identify criminals more effectively. The groups additionally underscored the role of drug abuse as a major driver of violent crimes such as thuggery, phone snatching and other attacks on innocent citizens, urging collective action from government, civil society, and local communities to restore safety and societal values. Meanwhile, the Kano State Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with the murders, with investigation ongoing.
