Family members, prominent dignitaries, Islamic scholars, and community leaders on Friday gathered in Kano for a special prayer session to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of late General Murtala Ramat Muhammed, Nigeria’s former Head of State.
The solemn prayer session was held at the Masallacin Murtala, Hausawa, Zoo Road, Kano, where clerics led Quranic recitations and supplications for the repose of the late leader’s soul. The gathering drew relatives of the late General, traditional rulers, religious scholars, and members of the public who came to honour his memory.
The prayers formed part of a series of commemorative activities organised by the Murtala Muhammed Foundation (MMF) to mark five decades since General Muhammed was assassinated during an abortive coup on February 13, 1976.
Speaking at the event, family representatives and dignitaries described the late Head of State as a symbol of discipline, patriotism, and selfless leadership, noting that his brief tenure left a lasting impact on Nigeria’s political and administrative history. Prayers were also offered for peace, unity, and good governance in the country.
The Kano prayer session is one of several activities lined up nationwide to commemorate the golden anniversary, including leadership dialogues, policy conversations, exhibitions, and memorial lectures in Lagos and Abuja.
General Murtala Muhammed, who ruled Nigeria from July 1975 until his assassination in 1976, is widely remembered for his decisive leadership style, sweeping public service reforms, strong anti-corruption posture, and commitment to a swift return to civilian rule.
